Renting A Dumpster? 4 Steps To Keep It From Becoming The Neighborhood Dumping Ground

When you rent a dumpster, you want to make sure it's used for the purpose you intended. There's nothing worse than renting a dumpster only to have it turn into the neighborhood dumping ground. If you're going to be renting a dumpster for your latest home improvement project, don't be taken advantage by others who would fill it up before you get a chance to. Here are four simple steps you can take to avoid falling victim to illegal dumping.

Choose the Location Carefully

If you're planning on renting a dumpster, take the time to choose the delivery location carefully. Once your dumpster arrives, you'll be asked where you want to have it placed. To prevent illegal dumping, choose a location that isn't right next to the street. If it's too close to the street, it will be convenient for passersby to dump their garbage and get away quickly. Instead, choose a spot that's closer to your home.

Avoid Early Delivery

If you know when you're going to begin work, schedule delivery for a time that's closest to that start date. While it might seem convenient to schedule delivery a few days in advance, leaving your dumpster empty, and unused, will invite illegal dumping. Once your dumpster arrives, begin filling it up as soon as possible. This will deter others from using your dumpster illegally.

Install Temporary Security Lighting

Most illegal dumping occurs overnight, when the threat of being seen is at its lowest. If you're going to have a rental dumpster in your yard, install temporary security lighting near its location. Solar-powered security lighting can be purchased at most home improvement stores. These lights don't have to be wired for installation, which means you can move them to another location in your yard once your clean-up project is completed. The additional lighting will reduce the chances of having your dumpster used without permission.

Secure the Lid

Illegal dumpers like easy-access to dumpsters. You can reduce illegal activity by securing your dumpster lid when it's not in use. The easiest way to do that is with a heavy-duty tarp, and large bungee cords. Place the tarp over your dumpster, and secure it with your bungee cords. You can also use a padlock, if your dumpster lid has a latch on it.

Don't let your dumpster get turned into the neighborhood dumping grounds. Use the tips provided here to prevent illegal dumping.
